Saint Valentine’s Day: History and Traditions of the Holiday of Love

Saint Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14, is considered one of the most romantic holidays of the year. Its history dates back centuries and is associated with real events and legends about Saint Valentine, the patron of lovers.

Legend has it that Saint Valentine lived in the 3rd century in the Roman Empire. At that time, Emperor Claudius II banned young people from getting married, believing that single men made better soldiers. However, Father Valentine could not accept such injustice. He secretly married couples, helping them preserve their love.

When the emperor discovered his actions, Valentine was sentenced to death. According to the legend, before his execution, he wrote a heartfelt letter to the jailer’s daughter, with whom he had grown fond, signing it with the words “Your Valentine.” It is believed that this letter was the first “Valentine” in history.

Today, Saint Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love and romance. Couples confess their feelings to each other, exchange cards, flowers, and sweets. The most popular tradition is giving Valentines—heart-shaped cards with warm wishes and love messages. Red roses, symbols of passion and love, are a traditional gift. Many couples arrange romantic dinners, propose marriage, and exchange meaningful gifts.

In different countries, the holiday has its unique customs:

  • In Japan, women give chocolate to men on this day. There are two types: “giri-choco” (for friends and colleagues) and “honmei-choco” (for a loved one). Men return the favor a month later, on March 14, during White Day.

  • In Italy, heart-shaped chocolates are considered a symbol of love, and couples often take romantic walks near ancient castles.

  • In England, there was once a belief that the first person you meet on the morning of February 14 would become your true love.

Saint Valentine’s Day is not just about romantic love. It’s a wonderful opportunity to bring joy to your loved ones and remind them that love and care are what truly matter in life.
