In the heart of Alicante province, at the foot of the Sierra de Mariola mountains, lies the charming town of Alcoy — one of the most atmospheric places in southeastern Spain. With its rich industrial heritage, unique architecture, and the famous "Moors and Christians" festival, this city turns into a living stage of medieval times each year.

Founded during Muslim rule, Alcoy became a key location during the Reconquista, when Christian kingdoms were reclaiming land from the Moors. You can still feel this deep history today by strolling along the old streets lined with modernist facades, visiting museums, or crossing the ancient bridges that span dramatic gorges.
Often referred to as the "cradle of the Industrial Revolution in the Valencian region", Alcoy thrived thanks to its booming textile industry in the 19th century. Today, many of its old factory buildings have been transformed into museums and cultural spaces.

The Main Event: "Moors and Christians Festival"
The Moros y Cristianos Festival in Alcoy is one of the most striking and oldest festivals in Spain. It’s held each year in honor of Saint George (San Jorge), the city’s patron saint. According to legend, Saint George appeared in battle in 1276 to help the Christians defeat the Moors.
The official festival dates are April 22, 23, and 24, with April 21 dedicated to Music Day.
What to expect:
Grand parades with extravagant costumes. Participants are split into "Moors" and "Christians," each with their own flags, bands, and characters.
Historical battle reenactments, where Christians defend the city from Moorish invaders.
Gunpowder, fireworks, and drums — everything rumbles, flashes, and immerses you in the battle atmosphere.
The appearance of Saint George on a white horse, riding atop the castle walls in the final, dramatic scene.
This is not just a festival — it’s the heartbeat of the city. Locals decorate their homes, music fills the streets, and a proud, joyful spirit takes over every corner.
Why you absolutely need to end up in Alcoy (at least once)
Because this isn’t just a city — it’s a time machine running on drumbeats. You don’t need VR goggles to feel like a medieval knight (or a Moorish commander in a gilded helmet).
Come for a festival that shatters expectations — thousands of costumes, real cannons, and a heroic Saint George galloping along the walls. If that doesn’t move something inside you, check your pulse.
Walk the bridges that connect more than just banks — they connect centuries. Architecture here is a duel between modernist curves and industrial grit, and the city wins both rounds.
And when all that beauty wears you out — vanish into the mountains. Bring wine, cheese, a good companion, and melt into the juniper-scented air of Sierra de Mariola.
This is Spain without the clichés. Alive. Raw. Real. With an accent. With attitude. With a history that’s not studied — it’s inhaled.
